Police now believe that missing college student James “Jimmy” Gracey was killed in an accident in the water earlier this week while in Barcelona, Spain, a spokesperson tells PEOPLE.
Everything “points to James Gracey having suffered an accidental death,” the spokesperson says.
They cited security camera footage that, according to El País, shows the 20-year-old University of Alabama student alone and walking toward the docks before he fell in.
However, the police spokesperson was not able to say where Gracey went in.
His body was pulled from the water off of Somorrostro beach on Thursday, March 19, days after he was reported missing.
His family has said that he was in Barcelona with friends during spring break and had gone on Monday, March 16, to the beachfront Shôko nightclub. He was last seen early the next morning when he separated from a friend.

The incident remains under investigation and an autopsy is pending, according to officials.
In a statement shared with PEOPLE, Gracey’s family said they were “heartbroken.”
“Jimmy was a deeply loved son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend, and our family is struggling to come to terms with this unimaginable loss,” his relatives said.
“As we navigate this painful time, we kindly ask for privacy so that we may grieve together and begin to process his loss as a family,” they said.
In a separate statement, his fraternity, Theta Chi, remembered him as “a young man of deep faith, genuine care for others, and an abiding commitment to his brothers and his community.”
