Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been named the NBA’s 2024–25 Most Valuable Player, surpassing Nikola Jokić and Giannis Antetokounmpo in a highly competitive race. The Oklahoma City Thunder guard delivered an exceptional season, leading the league with an average of 32.7 points per game on 51.9% shooting, along with 6.4 assists, 5.0 rebounds, 1.7 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game.
Under his leadership, the Thunder achieved a franchise-best 68–14 record and secured the top seed in the Western Conference. Gilgeous-Alexander’s consistent performance included a record-breaking streak of 72 consecutive games scoring at least 20 points, surpassing Michael Jordan’s previous record.
In the MVP voting, he received 71 out of 100 first-place votes, outpacing Jokić, who garnered 29 first-place votes and averaged a triple-double for the season. Antetokounmpo finished third in the voting.
During his emotional MVP acceptance speech, Gilgeous-Alexander paid tribute to his wife, Hailey Summers, acknowledging her support and influence on his personal and professional life. He also expressed gratitude to his teammates by gifting each of them a Rolex watch, fulfilling a promise he made earlier in the season.
This accolade marks Gilgeous-Alexander as the second Canadian to win the NBA MVP award, following Steve Nash, and continues the trend of international players receiving the honor in recent years.
With the Thunder advancing to the Western Conference Finals, Gilgeous-Alexander’s leadership and performance have positioned the team as strong contenders for the NBA championship.
